Year 6

Welcome to Year 6.


We have welcomed back the children and become engrossed in our new topic: Wonderful World of Words. The children have been researching where words have come from and what do words mean? Some children have showcased their understanding by creating fantastic pieces of art that reflect the meaning of particular words; created presentations to show their understanding and some have even created games. 

The children have also been putting their words to a silent video. They generated a word bank that sorted words into best fit and then applied them to their own independent piece of writing - there were some really imaginative and creative pieces of writing.

In maths, the children have gone back to basics and are looking at different mental maths strategies and discussed how they help us to solve even complex calculations: we have a lot of deep thinkers!

What is a 'geep'?

This is what Year 6 were asked at the beginning of the week. The children were creating their own hybrid animals. First the children needed to research about their animals. Then they became creative. Some children created models, some painted pictures and some created powerpoint presentations. They used this information to base their writing, developing their word choices and varied sentence structures.

In maths, the children have been looking at addition and subtraction using concrete and pictorial representations to justify their understanding. 

Week commencing 20th September

This week, the children continued to build upon their knowledge of their hybrid animals, making improvements on the previous week's work. It was incredible what the children produced. Fantastic games, that the children enjoyed playing, artwork that even had its own stand and creative writing pieces including the discovery of the animal, diary entries and factfiles. 

In their writing, the children created a NCR based on their animal, piecing together last week's skills.

In maths, the children have been looking at multiplication using concrete and pictorial representations to justify their understanding. They then applied this understanding to word problems.

Welcome to the Circus

The children have been studying a new topic: The Circus. The children generated key questions they wanted to answer and then researched. Over two weeks, the children created different forms of work to showcase their understanding. The children created movies, posters and even circuses with moving elements. Alongside their research, the children have been writing their own circus story: aiming to create suspense and tension.

In maths, the children have been reading, writing, ordering, comparing numbers up to 10,000,000. They have been able to use numberlines or counters to justify their answers.

Welcome to the Circus

The children have continued to be extremely busy. They have started to look at how a circuit works to help them either make their circus act move or to create light to advertise their circus. Here are our electricians at work!



Should Animals be used to save a human's life?

Through this new topic, the children will be learning about how the heart works, why it is important to have a balanced diet and to exercise and compare a human's heart to an animal's heart. So far the children have discovered how the heart works; what the blood carries to our cells and how we get rid of waste. They have continued to present their work in such creative ways and the standard of work is just getting better and better as the weeks go by - we are very proud of them.
