 Year 2

Autumn 1

Our current topic, 'Where have all the toys gone?'

where have all the toys gone 24 25.pdf

The children loved our transition topic - 'What birds live in the rainforest?'

We used the film 'Rio' to help us learn about wildlife in Brazil. We tasted tropical fruit, made carnival hats and animal masks and celebrated our learning with a fun carnival at the end of the learning journey. The children loved it!

Autumn 2

Our topic this half term - 'What goes snap, crackle and pop?'

what goes snap crackle and pop.pdf

This half term, year 2 have been learning about Guy Fawkes and the gunpowder plot. We made bonfire art by blowing paint and using sticks to create a realistic bonfire scene. We produced a poster for parents telling them all the facts we learnt about Guy Fawkes. We also wrote some diary entries retelling a firework party.

In science, we experimented with different materials to make the best umbrella. This meant the teachers got very wet when testing the children's ideas of what would be the most suitable material. The children loved watching this!

They also loved our experiments with Coke and Mentos and shaving foam art and food colouring art.

Spring 1

Our topic this half term - 'How to survive anywhere!'

how to survive anywhere.pdf

Over this half term the children have been learning about the world in our topic 'How to survive anywhere'. The children have learnt the names and located all of the continents and oceans.

We made a huge map in each classroom and drew animals that lived in each continent. We have discussed the weather, learnt more about the animals and the different landscapes of each place. The children used their understanding to write a story about exploring the world and an instruction for building a shelter or an igloo.

In science we made paper chain food chains to recap our learning from year one and to learn more about the environments and adaptations of animals.

The children used excellent DT skills to make their own picture frames. They measured, sawed and joined their frames and made a picture to go inside. We then evaluated our efforts and thought about how we could improve our made products next time.

Spring 2

Our topic for this term has been 'Earth Heroes!' The children started their learning journey by doing a litter pick around the school. It was surprising how much litter we found. We discussed how this can affect the animals living in our environment and our planet as a whole.

Through the topic, we became environmentalists and learnt how to save the world. We got creative and made classroom displays and shared our own stories based on 'Somebody Swallowed Stanley' with the Year 5 children as their audience.

This topic was history lead. We learnt about our Earth heroes: Jane Goodall, David Attenborough and Greta Thunberg. The children looked at how these people have had an impact on the world and what we need to continue to do to make the world a better place.  We produced posters about our favourite Earth Hero.

Within the topic, we went to Stubbington Study Centre and carried out pond dipping to see what animals live in their pond environment. The children loved this and found lots of interesting creatures which they took back to a classroom to study.

We also had a visit from Reverend Dan who taught us about the Easter story.

Summer 1

The children have thoroughly engaged with our current history topic 'When did gaming begin?'
They were launched back in time on a hook day, where they played on retro consoles like the SNES, MegaDrive, PS1 and original Gameboys to see how gaming has changed over time. They could play the original versions of Sonic and Mario games and played a FIFA game from 1998.

They have written some fantastic game reviews, instructions for their own video game and also made their own gaming adverts, filming them on an iPad.

In history, they have learnt how computers have evolved over time and how the internet has changed our way of life. They also researched and discussed whether gaming was good or bad for us.

In Science, the children have learnt about forces and experimented with drainpipes and marble runs, making their own marble runs at home.

We have also had a Science Week in school where the children made 'flower bombs' for their gardens and habitats for toy animals to take home. They also pretended to be birds and used Skittles and chocolate M&Ms in a game to try and eat all the berries that weren't the poisonous red berries (Skittles).

The weather has helped this half term meaning we could enjoy lots of our learning outside. It has been an awesome Summer term so far!
